As the year comes to a close, are you reflecting on how you want 2024 to look like for you?

Setting goals for what you will accomplish in the next 12 months is important. It is equally important to decide what you will stop doing to make time, energy, and space for everything you want in your life.

To help you get started, I am sharing a list of behaviors in which professionals get trapped often and wonder why they are not living their best lives yet.

  1. Making decisions based on what they do not want. This is not a bad place to start. However, before you pick up something you are indifferent towards to get away from what you do not want, ask yourself – As I walk away from ‘X,’ what do I want to walk towards? This question will help you be more intentional in your choices.
  2. Waiting to be asked. When you wait to be asked for your point of view or to contribute to a new project, you risk losing opportunities. Be proactive and take initiative to learn new things and interact with new people.
  3. Prioritize others over self. It is good to help others, but not at the cost of your physical, mental, and emotional health and not because you can not say ‘no.’ Learn to set clear boundaries to make time for what is important to you.
  4. Focussing on what is missing. While considering opportunities, play to your strengths rather than thinking about everything you do not have. Waiting to be 100% ready might keep you standing on the sidelines for long.
  5. Not advocating for self. Believe in yourself, spotlight your good work, and confidently ask for what you want. After all, if you do not bet on yourself, who will?

When you show up for yourself, you have more energy and enthusiasm for what you genuinely want to do. You do not hit snooze multiple times before getting out of bed. You do not fill your day with insignificant activities. You do not spend your time on mind-numbing TV, web series, or social media.

Setting the intention for what you will not do helps you come out of the shadows, stop playing small, and take confident action to pursue your ambitions. Do share what you will not do in 2024?
